Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a malignancy (a malignant tumour), also referred to as a neoplasm or carcinoma.

Cancers typically grow in an uncontrolled, poorly coordinated fashion, becoming larger and larger in the site of origin (the “primary” site). In the case of prostate cancer, the primary site is the prostate, and the cancer eventually “seeds” to other parts of the body where it grows and causes problems. This process is known as “metastasis”. Cancerous growths that originated in a primary site before spreading to other sites are commonly called “secondaries”.

Secondary cancers usually cause more problems than primary cancers for affected men, and are ultimately the usual cause of death. Often the primary tumour causes no specific problems for men and remains silent. Most prostate problems that men experience as they get older have no connection with prostate cancer and are most commonly caused by benign prostate conditions.

Every year in Australia, more than 20,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 3300 men die from prostate cancer every year.

For Australian men, this represents a 1-in-9, or 11 per cent, risk of developing prostate cancer during their lifetime.

In Victoria, about 3000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and more than 700 men in Victoria die from prostate cancer each year.

Prostate cancer is a more common cause of death in men than breast cancer is in women. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of men diagnosed with prostate cancer since the late 1980s, when the PSA blood test became available. The test has provided opportunities for earlier diagnosis and treatment, and better cure rates.
