Treatment

The treatment is straightforward.  Patients lie on their back in the same position as the planning CT, as still as possible and breathing normally.  The treatment machine, called a linear accelerator, moves around to deliver the treatment from three to five different directions.

Patients will not feel anything as the radiation is delivered.  Each treatment session lasts about 15-20 minutes, however most of this time is taken ensuring accurate positioning and delivery of radiation.  Prior to delivering the treatment each day, images, called an electronic portal image (EPI), are taken.  These images are like an x-ray and are used to ensure the prostate is in the correct position for treatment.
